Forgot to post this earlier. In our attempt to slowly make our booth more approachable and optimized for maximum awesome, we ended up deciding to get a backdrop banner of sorts! Using some of the game assets I had made for fun and the pixel-art avatars I had created of Jason and myself, this is what I came up with! Quite happy with how it turned out and hopefully getting a 2nd one shortly as we’re starting to get bigger booths as we grow. Now we just have to figure out a better way to display our products… haha

Bardbarian Title Screen

I’m working on a mobile (ios/android) game called Bardbarian! This is the title screen for that game.

I’m so very excited to be finally designing and working on games, it’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid, and whether this succeeds or fails doesn’t matter, it feels amazing to have come this far at very least.

Why chiptunes? Why anything? /rant

An ignorant person asked me today. ”Why do you listen to chiptunes so much? It’s all just bleeps and bloops and sounds the same”

The same could be said about literally any and all music that you don’t enjoy, I don’t enjoy country and therefore it all sounds the same to me.

I listen to chiptune and lo-res style music because it hits the perfect tone of nostalgia meets distraction. Have you ever had that artist, that album, that song that melts away the outside world for the brief amount of time you are listening?

A vast majority of chiptunes artists do this for me, for a short amount of time, I’m not a struggling artist dealing with the bullshit of my day, I’m not worried about bills or how much work I have on my plate. I’m 12 and playing snes with my little brother, not a worry or care in the world. Nobody misses being a kid more than me, and this music is how I cling to what’s left of that childlike sense of wonder and blissful ignorance. Whether or not the artist intended this music to create this feeling or if it’s just luck that it hits me this way is irrelevant, all that matters is that it fills me with an indescribable amount of joy and allows me to continue doing what I’m doing with a huge smile on my face.

I invite any and all of you to say less and listen more.

Sooo, I’m making names now, which is cool, and by cool I mean a dream come true, anyone who knows me knows I’ve wanted this since I was a kid. I remember drawing mario levels in my school binder instead of doing homework, drawing up fake mortal kombat characters and making tilesets for rpg maker 2k back in high school.

Long story short the amazing company I work for (gskinner.com) has given myself and a coworker the opportunity to create our own game under our own branch of the company. Well I’ve been sitting on the name TreeFortress for a while, and felt this would be a great candidate for our game company name. The name itself means a lot to me as it holds true with most of my own personal goals and values ( building empires on imagination, feet on the ground with head in the clouds, being childish in the way that everything can be new and exciting in the right mindset ) Everyone else seemed to like the name so I was tasked with creating a graphic of sorts for us to be used on the website/in-game splash screens.

Well… this is what I came up with.

Bardbarian Concepts

Here are some of the concepts for the main character of my upcoming mobile game Bardbarian!

About the game:

If the classic game of snake were an Action/RPG, it would be Bardbarian. If there was a game about doing what you love instead of what you were told, it would also be this game.

Your town is under attack from invading monster forces, this is the perfect time to prove to the townsfolk that your entire life has been an identity crisis. Born into a family of barbarians, all you ever wanted was to play music and inspire others, and this is your big shot!

Navigate through your town and rally units to fight for you, take out waves of incoming enemies and protect your town monument. Use loot dropped by enemies to upgrade your party and push back the invading forces.
